Lakeview FC moved to the top of the City Football League on Sunday after an 18-year-old substitute, Joel D'Souza, headed in a stoppage-time winner to beat Harbour United 2-1 in a derby delayed 40 minutes by heavy rain.
The ground staff worked with brooms and sponges to clear standing water before the referee allowed the match to start. The heavy pitch slowed the passing game both sides prefer, and the first half was full of long balls and slides.
Harbour United took the lead early in the second half through their captain Ashwin Nair, who curled a free kick over the wall. Lakeview equalised 12 minutes later when a cross from the right was turned in at the near post by striker Faisal Qureshi.
"I just attacked the ball. I did not even see it go in until everyone jumped on me," D'Souza said after the match. It was his first goal for the senior team.
League table, top four
| Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Lakeview FC | 9 | 21 |
| Harbour United | 9 | 19 |
| Riverside Athletic | 9 | 17 |
| Old Town Rovers | 8 | 15 |
Harbour coach Vinod Menon said the rain delay had disrupted his team's preparation but refused to blame the conditions. "They wanted it more in the last ten minutes," he said.
The two teams meet again in the cup semi-final next month.
